Couples Retreat Report

Bali is an amazing place. It is noted the world over as a place for
wonderful beaches and intriguing exposure to the quaint culture of an
ancient society. There is no question as to the natural beauty of the
coastline, and this small island offers a lot for those that enjoy
exploring small shops offering handcraft and other products of a very
different world.

But we were not here as tourists—though I would have loved to have at
least one opportunity to dip in the warm waters of this southeastern
sea. We were here to minister to the people, and we very sensitive to
the massive onslaught coming from the oppressive spirit of an intensely
idolatrous Hindu religion (different from the dominant Muslim religion
that is dominate throughout the rest of Indonesia). It permeates every
area of life, from the temples to the streets and deep into the mind set
of the people. The focus of their worship is Shiva, a god associated
with immorality and materialism.

The demonic spirit in the air was very obvious, and there were times
when both of us had to engage in personal spiritual warfare. We were
very aware of and very thankful for those we know are praying for us at
home.

The atmosphere inside where we were giving our Marriage Enrichment
Seminar, however, was very different. Most of the attendees were from
the church in Jakarta, but there were several from other churches and
other cities. Sharon and I were amazed by the intensity and hunger of
all the couples who were there to hear the truth of God applied to their
lives. We felt a wonderful acceptance and warmth from the people, who
spent many hours listening and discussing principles that would enrich
their marriages. We spent a lot of the time laughing and enjoying the
fellowship during the sessions. We even took time out to have a
romantic "Hawaiian" dinner on the beach—that turned out to be more
traditional costuming and a lot of good old fashion fun contests and
games. They even asked me to play "Misty" for them so they could do
a romantic dance—sure glad our church could not see me now!

But there were also wonderful times of soul searching and tears as the
Holy Spirit brought conviction and repentance to husbands and wives. We
ended the last session with a very moving time of reaffirmation between
husbands and wives. There were few dry eyes in the room by the time we
finished. Couples left the conference not only encouraged in their own
marriages, but with an understanding of the mission that God has given
them in being an example in their society that knows nothing about true
love and relationship. They have a strong desire to salt and light in
their communities, their cities, and their nation. God bless them as
they return to their homes and families!
